Wednesday 25 July 2018 - Visit to Amazon Fulfilment Centre, Hemel Hempstead
Ian Brearley has kindly arranged to lead a group visit to the Amazon Fulfilment Centre at Hemel Hempstead on Wednesday 25thJuly at 11.30. He has reserved a tour for a maximum of 30 people. We will travel by car, starting from Haddenham Village Hall at around 10.00am. Ian is researching a suitable venue for lunch.
If you are interested in attending, please let me know and also advise me whether you are willing to drive and whether you would like lunch. If we don’t fill the allocation by end of May I will be offering the visit to the whole of Haddenham U3A
Note from Ian Brearley:
The Amazon Fulfilment Centre is at Boundary Way, Hemel Hempstead, HP2 7UJ and our tour is booked for 11:30am and we need to be there by, I would suggest, 11:15 at the latest.
The journey from Haddenham took 50 minutes on a Sunday so leaving Haddenham promptly at 10 o’clock seems prudent.
On entering their car park the one way takes you to the left and there is reserved parking starting at the next corner. Please park nose out and make your way to reception at the other end of the car park.
Kevin has a suspiciously good app on his phone for finding pubs and offered 4 possibly venues. All four are in Leverstock Green Road but there are three Leverstock Green Roads.
My choice would be:
The Crabtree, Leverstock Road, HP2 4HG and they offer a full menu plus fixed lunch menus with a good choice of one, two or three courses at £4.79 to £8.79 and we could all probably sit in the same section or use the outdoor tables (July?) if preferred. The Crabtree is wheelchair friendly too. The pub can be found by leaving Amazon and heading back to the big roundabout where you turn right for Hemel. Over the next roundabout and keep in the right hand lane and turn right into Leverstock Green Road. The Crabtree is a short distance up on the left and has a reasonable car park.
The next choice is:
The Plough, Leverstock Green Road, HP3 8PR .Full lunch time menu but no lunch special. Smaller car park and slightly higher prices. This pub can be found by turning right at the first roundabout, over the next and then keep to the left hand lane and turn left into the other Leverstock Green Road and is a little way up on the right.
The other two pubs are to found in yet another Leverstock Green Road which is found by taking Leverstock Green Way at the second roundabout. They are The Green Man HP3 8QE and The Leather Bottle HP3 8QQ which may well be very nice but I couldn’t find them on the day.
Any questions just drop a line to Ian Brearley on firstname.lastname@example.org
Visit to London Transport Museum (Back-up depot at Acton) - late August 2018
Mike Darnell has kindly offered to investigate and organise a visit. Travel would be by car share:
This is an enquiry as to how many people might be interested in a visit to the London Transport Museum in Acton - this is not the main Museum, but the 'back-up' depot. The Museum Depot in Acton is the working museum store housing over 370,000 objects. Sights include rare road & rail vehicles spanning over 100 years, bus and rail sheds, signs, ceramic tiles, ephemera and ticket machines.
We can book a private guided tour for either 10, 20 or 30 people. There is a charge of £100, £200 or £280 respectively, so I would need to find 10, 20 or 30 people to minimise the cost per head.
The timing would probably be on a Friday in late Autumn, so I'm getting in early. Please give me an initial idea of whether you are interested by sending a note to
Proposed visit to Triumph Motorcycle Factory
If enough people are interested, I will make a group booking for the next available Wednesday in October which is the earliest month for which bookings are available. Maximum group size is 15
The factory is at Hinckley, Leicestershire (LE10 3BZ) and, depending on your chosen route, the journey should take between 1.5 and 2 hours (66 and 80 miles respectively). I suggest car sharing. I would aim to arrange the start of the visit for about 11:00.
Cost is £15.00 per head which would need to be paid 6 weeks in advance of the visit (no refunds). The factory guided tour takes about 1.5 hours and they suggest that we leave another 2 hours for the “factory visit experience” (aka museum) which is free. There are catering facilities on site.
For now, please let me know if you would like to sign up for this visit – in the next week please.
