Earth Matters Group

A number of U3A members from both Haddenham and Greater Thame expressed an interest in setting up a group which we have named ‘Earth Matters’ as in ‘matters’ relating to the earth but also recognising the ecological aspects in that the earth does ‘matter’. So this is a joint group between the two U3As

Are you interested in studying your local environment? Would you like to know more about Botany, Geology, Archaeology, Palaeontology and Ecology. The emphasis will be on learning more about our local area. We arrange field trips with expert guides at two-monthly intervals between March and November and have an indoor meeting in the winter. The usual day is the second Wednesday of the month.

If you are interested in joining the group please contact Sue Oswell 01844 290568 sue.oswell@btopenworld.com. We would also be delighted to hear from you if you have an interest or area of expertise which could contribute to the group’s learning, or if you have any further ideas for possible trips.

We do hope you can join us.

Wednesday 12 September 2018  - visit to Otmoor RSPB reserve near Beckley

On Wednesday 12th September we will meet Barry Oxley at 2.30pm at the Otmoor RSPB reserve near Beckley. He took us round the reserve when the group was very new.  On that occasion we concentrated on the plantings that encourage bird life. This time we will see how things have developed on both the bird and the plant front. Barry says that if we are lucky we might see the Hobby families catching dragonflies over the water, The contribution to the RSPB will be either £4 or £5 a head depending on numbers and we will be out for between 11/2 and 2 hours depending on the weather. There are no toilets at the site!

Wednesday 14 November 2018 - talk on River Thames Conservation

On Wednesday 14th November we are having a talk by Natalie Breden who is the Conservation Officer for the (River) Thame conservation Trust. This meeting will be held in the Haddenham Methodist Church and will start at 2.30pm.  I will let you know details of our contribution to the speaker and venue nearer the time.

If anyone has any contacts or ideas for meetings in 2019 please let me know.  We are hoping that Francis Gomme will be able to take us to Pulpit Hill again in June but we need indoor events for January and March and outdoor ones for May and July.
I will send out a reminder at the beginning of September and make a list of participants then.
Enjoy August
