National Inter-League Competitions 2012 - 2013

Once again the League has entered teams in the National Inter-League Competitions.

The Aylesbury team of Mark Scott, Andy Misseldine and Darren Palmer played in a zonal round at Birmingham on Saturday April 27th. They had been drawn in a strong group with Birmingham, Leamington and Kettering.

Their first match was with the formidable Birmingham team. Starting a match at 10 am is bad enough but to face opponents whose serves are near impossible to return and who receive your normally match winning serves and hits and nonchalantly blast them to the far corners of the table must be mind blowing. It is to Mark and Andy's credit that the Birmingham players did not have things all their own way and the doubles was certainly very competitive but it was no surprise to see Birmingham win 5 - 0. The noon encounter was with Leamington. Two years ago these two teams had met and Leamington won 5 - 0. This match was closer. The young Leamington number one proved too strong for Mark and Darren but they both proved the Leamington captain beatable with Darren notable for a fine attacking display.  Mark and Andy played the doubles which proved very close. At one stage in the fifth game they looked likely to succeed but a series of dropped points at the end meant a narrow defeat. So it ended a narrow 3 - 2 win for Leamington. The 2pm match was with Kettering. Darren set off as he had finished against Leamington with all guns blazing but the Kettering player proved to be a star at blocking offensive shots and Darren had no answer. Mark comfortably beat the Kettering No. 2 and then Mark and Darren won the doubles comfortably. Two all and our hopes were high but that was to be the end of our successes and Kettering won 3 - 2.

Summing up our team had enjoyed a testing time against strong opposition and on another day could easily have squeezed 3 - 2 wins against Leamington and Kettering but there was no doubting that Birmingham were the deserved winners of the Group and we will watch to see how they fare in the Finals in June.

The Zonal Rounds of the Carter Cup Knockout Competition for Boys took place in January 2013. The League hosted two of the Zonal Group events at Milton Keynes TTC in January.

Our A team comprised brothers Matt and Tom Bradbury from Quainton and were grouped with Leamington B and Didcot. They lost 0 - 5 to Leamington but lost only narrowly 2 - 3 to Didcot. The strong Leamington team won the Group.

Our B team of Joe Gerrans (Sports) and late substitute Ollie Chenkin from Tring faced formidable opposition from Leamington A and Leicester. It was no surprise that they lost both matches 0 - 5 but the individual games were competitive. Leamington again won a group.
