Who we are and what we do
Wendover Twinning Association was initially started as an exchange between the John Colet School and the Collège Martin Luther King in Liffré, Brittany but it soon became apparent that there was enough interest among the adults for a Town Exchange to be created and the Twinning Charter was drawn up in 1975. We are now in our thirty-sixth year of twinning and in that time many long-lasting friendships have been made between English and French members. Liffré is a small town to the north-east of Rennes, with amazing sporting and social facilities which would be the envy of many large cities in England. The locals are immensely hospitable and full of fun and there is a great sense of community.
There is a Town Exchange annually, with the French visiting us one year and our members paying a return visit the following year. Members stay with host families and there is always a lively programme of activities in which everyone participates. The French members are extremely keen to meet us and although not all of them speak English a dictionary and a bottle of wine work wonders and there is a lot of fun to be had. Twinning provides an excellent way to get to know the French, speak their language and join in their life-style for a brief period, and of course, to show them ours when they come here. For many of them it’s the first time they’ve visited England and it’s a great pleasure to introduce them to England and to show them that they can eat well over here!
In between the Town Exchanges we have an active social programme: we hold a meeting with a speaker once a month from October to May, a drop-in coffee morning in the Red Lion, Wendover on the second Thursday of the month at 10.30 am and we also hold summer functions such as barbecues as well as –when possible - an annual winter weekend somewhere in France. Since not all our members speak French the monthly meetings and coffee mornings are conducted in English but these evenings are an excellent opportunity to get to know everyone and to learn more about Twinning.
The Association is open to all, whether you live in Wendover or not: we would love to meet you and introduce you to an enjoyable way of learning more about la belle France.
