Earth Matters Group

A number of U3A members from both Haddenham and Greater Thame expressed an interest in setting up a group which we have named ‘Earth Matters’ as in ‘matters’ relating to the earth but also recognising the ecological aspects in that the earth does ‘matter’. So this is a joint group between the two U3As

Are you interested in studying your local environment? Would you like to know more about Botany, Geology, Archaeology, Palaeontology and Ecology. The emphasis will be on learning more about our local area. We arrange field trips with expert guides at two-monthly intervals between March and November and have an indoor meeting in the winter. The usual day is the second Wednesday of the month.

If you are interested in joining the group please contact Sue Oswell 01844 290568 sue.oswell@btopenworld.com. We would also be delighted to hear from you if you have an interest or area of expertise which could contribute to the group’s learning, or if you have any further ideas for possible trips.

We do hope you can join us.

Greatmoor Energy Waste Plant

We had an extremely interesting visit to the Greatmoor Energy from Waste plant.  We saw what happens to our green bin waste to reduce the bulk going to landfill and learnt about some items that really cause a lots of problems. 'Incinerator' is a non-PC word apparently! I have a list of about 9 people who could not go on the first visit so I will ask Jez for some more possible dates.  If you would like to attend please email me.

Wednesday 8th November - Talk on RSPB

Our next indoor meeting will be 2.15 for 2.30 at Christchurch,Thame on Wednesday 8th November. We will hear about the work of the RSPB which I am sure will be popular. The birds need suitable environments so providing those in a changing world that is part of their work too.
I am waiting for an appointment for an operation so can you please let Dorcas Metcalfe know if you are coming so that she can have some idea of numbers for tea/coffee and biscuits. Dorcas' email is  dorcas.metcalf@gmx.com or 01844 260456
if you can help her on the day could you let her know.

Wednesday 15 November 2017 - TVN Study Day on Aspects of Archaeology in the Thames Valley

Group members may be interested in this event being put on by the Thames Valley Network at Benson Village Hall.

Go to the Local U3A Networks page for further details and booking application form.

Wednesday 10 January 2018 - Talk on Watlington Hoard

Advance date: On Wednesday 10th January James Mather will be telling us how he found the Watlington Hoard of coins which is now part of the Ashmolean Collection. He will talk more generally about metal detecting too. This find has prompted a re-think on the role of Alfred and the king of the Mercians. You may have heard the news that sufficient funds have been raised to keep the items in Oxfordshire.
Enjoy the autumn weather and keep an eye open for interesting events that we may be able to replicate in our programme
Sue

Many thanks to all those group members who help to organise our venues, speakers and refreshments. Please keep your eyes open for events run by organisations such as BBOWT and see if you can find out details so that we have a programme for 2018! I keep a list of possible ideas so please send them to me and we will see how they fit together to cover our varied interests
