Comments at Week 5

Hardly has it seemed that the season has started in Divisions 2 and 3 then we find ourselves reaching the first quarter point.

With several first division players dropping down plus some exciting new recruits Division 2 is tougher than ever. Tring B lead by just a point from Haddenham E with Bucks CC C and Sports F a point further behind. Tring have already secured a draw and a 6-4 win over the Bucks and Sports teams respectively. With veteran Gordon Whitehead and young players Ant McCormack, Will Shackleton and Matt George all playing well they will take some stopping. The formidable Sports F with Nobby Tennison, Pete Edwards and Joe Gerrans and Haddenham with John Cripps and Simon Witney will chase them all the way. Bucks CC C too will not be far adrift having been strengthened by the promotion of ever improving Stuart Brewer and newcomer Amit Srivavasta

In Division 3 Tring D have stormed into the lead with only Bucks CC E keeping pace. Tring's Steve Tipton, no mean player himself, has the cream of the new talent from Tring's academy at his finger tips and the team should lead in the promotion chase. The Bucks team with former division two players Tony Greenham and Brian Whitehead plus newcomer Vraj Puchooa will give them a run for their money. Their surprise 8 - 2 victory over the other favourites Sports I placed a marker. Longwick B should be thereabouts also.

 Re week 11

Division Two saw the meeting of the bottom two teams. Quainton C's visit to Sports G saw them as all too often with only two players but Mick Simmonds scored his usual threesome leaving Sports with a 7 - 3 victory.

Top team Bucks C visited Sports H. Sports fielded their latest addition Atif Kaudri who made an instant impact with a doubles maximum pegging the leaders back to only a 6 - 4 win. Sports E visited Bucks B and shocked them with a 10 -0 whitewash which lifted the Sports team to joint second with Haddenham. John Richardson made a second appearance for Tring C with a clean sweep lifting them to a surprise 6 - 4 victory over Bucks D. Sports F overcame Rivets B by the same score despite Steve Everest's maximum.

In Division Three Longwick B visited rivals Sports I and thanks to Patrick Walton's threesome won 7 - 3 moving them in to the  top since Tring  D and Bucks E were idle. Risborough A returned to full strength and beat Brill B 8 - 2 while clubmates Risborough B were beaten 6 - 4 at Elmhurst A.

 Mid Season

At the halfway stage of the season six teams are in the battle for Division Two.  A run of good results could see any of them finish in the promotion places. Bucks CC C lead but Sports E, Haddenham E and Tring B are all within immediate striking distance with games in hand. Quainton C, Sports G and Tring C trail but with players like Mick Simmonds and a returning Paul Unwin, Atif Kaudri and John Richardson respectively available they are capable of surprising the best teams. Of the regular players none are unbeaten and the top three , Mick Simmonds, Steve Everest and Martin Gillett, are all from teams outside the top four. Ant McCormack, one of Tring's young bloods, comes fourth and veteran John Willcocks 5th.

In Division Three Longwick B have overtaken both of the early leaders, Tring D and Bucks E, but the latter two have games in hand. Sports I will be there if any of these slip. Longwick seem to have strength in depth and look odds on for a promotion spot. Whether Tring can beat them to the title may hinge on how well their policy of blooding new young players through this team works. The imperious Dave Stevens leads the averages with 100% closely chased by Patrick Walton, Brian Whitehead, Steve Tipton and Peter Messenger.

Bucks C kept them in sight after a struggled 6 - 4 win at Rivets B. Sports E hung on to third spot despite losing to clubmates Sports H. Olu Sokoya was their star with 3 singles. Haddenham E made up ground hammering Quainton C 9 -1. Cripps and Deaney scored doubles maximums. The Bucks derby between the B and D teams finished all square. Rod Payne won his singles.

No single regular player dominates the averages but recent newcomer Atif Kaudri has already established himself at the top with 88% closely followed by veteran Steve Everest with 87% and junior player Ant McCormack with 86%.

Division Three

Tring D continue to lead. A 9 - 1 beating of Elmhurst B helped them on the way. Georgina Lark and Steve Tipton were unbeaten. Longwick B won 6 -4 at Brill B thanks to Peter Messenger's treble and keep second place. Sports I maintain third place thanks to an 8 - 2 win at Elmhurst A. Phil Blind was unbeaten. The Risborough derby proved to be a tie. Dave Stevens got his usual three singles but unusually lost in the doubles.

As usual the unbeaten Dave Stevens dominates the averages. Patrick Walton and Brian Whitehead are second and third both having lost one game.

HADDENHAM F HAVE WITHDRAWN FROM THE THIRD DIVISION COMPETITION OWING TO CONTINUING PROBLEMS IN FIELDING A TEAM AND FULFILLING THEIR PROGRAMME OF FIXTURES. THEIR RECORD WILL BE EXPUNGED UNDER RULE 8.15.

Comments

In Division Two Bucks CC C drew level with Tring B at the top with impressive wins over 2 man Quainton C 9 -1 and tough opponents Sports E 6 - 4. Olu Sokoya played well for the latter but could not stop Stuart Brewer winning his singles. Nevertheless the result was good enough to lift the Sports team to third place while Haddenham E slipped out of the top three with defeats at Bucks CC B by 8 - 2 and at home to Sports E by 6 - 4. Gerry Saunders and Rob Perry won their singles for the Bucks Team. Bucks CC D's 8 - 2 victory over Sports G was enough to lift them to 5th place. Martin Gillett was unbeaten. Sports H continue to pose a threat to the higher teams beating Bucks CC B 9 - 1 with Atif Kaudri and Dafna Dekel unbeaten.

In Division Three Tring D continue to lead with a victory 8 - 2 at Brill B but they met stiff opposition at home to Longwick B drawing 5 -5. Patrick Walton (Longwick) was man of the match. Sports I drew with Bucks CC E for whom Tony Greenham won his 3 singles. They then went on to win at Rivets C 9 - 1 thereby leapfrogging to second place. Meanwhile Bucks CC E beat 2 player Risborough A 7 - 3 to gain third place. Wes Fraser won two for Risborough. Risborough B won 7 - 3 at Elmhurst B to gain sixth place thanks to David Simpson's singles maximum.

Comments after Week 17

Div Two

Tring B continue to rule the roost despite a couple of tricky fixtures. They only managed a draw at Bucks D for whom Martin Gillett scored a doubles maximum. Shorthanded in their next fixture with Quainton C Gordon Whitehead and junior Matt George won all their games for a 7 - 3 victory. Second place Bucks C are consistent beating Bucks B and then Sports G by 7 - 3 as are third place Sports E with 6 - 4 wins over Tring C and Rivets B. Haddenham E won 8 - 2 over Sports G thanks to Simon Witney's threesome and retained fourth place. Sports H and Bucks D tie for fifth place  Atif Kaudri was unbeaten as Sports H put Sports F to the sword 8 - 2. Quainton C have lifted themselves from the bottom of the table for the first time this season.

Div Three

9 - 1 wins over Elmhurst B and Brill B have lifted Bucks E to the top of the table. Paul Hartnell was unbeaten at singles. Sports I's whitewash of shorthanded Risborough A gives them second place. With no fixtures Tring D drop to third place. Despite Patrick Walton's three wins Longwick B suffered a surprise defeat at Elmhurst A 6 - 4. Both Tring and Longwick have games in hand and may still catch the leaders. Rivets C lost 4 - 6 to Risborough A but then won 7 -3 at Elmhurst B and keep a mid table position alongside Brill B who won 7 - 2 over Elmhurst A  in a match where both sides only had two players.

 Comments on final week.

Double Triumph for Unbeaten Tring Teams

Remarkably this final week of the season featured matches between the top two teams in both Divisions Two and Three.

In Div Three the veterans of Sports I, Phil Blind, Derek Marlow and Frank Hardy, visited Tring D who featured veteran captain Steve Tipton together with his choice for the week from the Tring pool of juniors, James George and Sam Phillips. A neutral observer could reasonably look forward to a draw but the Tring juniors showed their finest form of the season to overwhelm their opposition 9 - 1 in what was actually a highly competitive match of a standard far above that normally to be seen at this level. The undoubted star was James who is already showing the benefits of special coaching sessions at Milton Keynes whilst Sam far exceeded his previous results this season. The result leaves the Tring team unbeaten and all but champions as current third team Bucks E would have to get 19 points from their final two fixtures to overtake them, an unrealistic prospect.

Later Bucks E took advantage of Sports defeat to establish themselves as runners up by winning 8 - 2 at Elmhurst A. This result confirmed Tring as Champions. The Elmhurst boys, Ethan, Dom and Josh, made Bucks work hard for their win with most games being close.

Elsewhere Rivets C won at Risborough B 8 - 2 to finish in mid table.

In Div Two runners up Bucks C entertained Champions Tring B with just the honour of taking the Champions unbeaten record to play for. Tring's young players, Ant McCormack, Matt George and Will Shackleton took command from the start and their record never looked in jeopardy. Nevertheless this was a close, keenly fought contest with fortunes swinging, not least in Stuart Brewer's matches with Will and Ant. Fiendish serves, stunning smashes, amazing retrievals were features of the play. Amit Srivavasta and David Bradbury both took wins from Will but the Tring pair took a tight doubles to complete a deserved 6 - 4 victory.

Elsewhere in Div 2 Sports E and Sports H both clinched a top four finish, the former with a 7 -3 win over clubmates Sports G thanks to a John Willcocks maximum, the latter with an emphatic 9 - 1 win at Rivets B thanks to maximums from Atif Kaudri and Dafna Dekel. Rivets have had a difficult season but finish clear of the relegation places. Tring C edged away from the lower reaches with a victory 6 - 4 over short handed Haddenham E. Bearing in mind the undoubted quality of their team Haddenham must be disappointed with their final mid table position. Quainton C's miserable season continued with a 9 - 1 dismissal by Bucks D.
